The Grand Tour is back in 2026 for a new series! Kind of…
The show is back, but as we know it has new presenters. Out go Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, and in their place we have three new guys.
I’ve watched the first episode of the brand new series, and here’s what I thought.
Stating the most obvious change, the show has new presenters. They are James Engelsman, Thomas Holland and Francis Bourgeois.
Never heard of them? That’s OK, neither had I.
All three come from the world of social media, rather than a traditional TV or other celebrity background.
James Engelsman and Thomas Holland have a YouTube channel called Throttled House, which has over 3.4 million subscribers. Francis Bourgeois is a trainspotter, with millions of subscribers on TikTok and Instagram.
More on the presenters below. As for the show, I watched the first episode and here’s what I thought.
First off it takes the format of the later Grand Tour series, i.e. it’s like the one-off specials, rather than having a studio and guests of the really early series of The Grand Tour.
I have always preferred this format, going on adventures and being “on tour” rather than the in-studio stuff.
The first episode sees them in America, going across the Mojave desert with petrol powered sports cars (driving a Mustang GTD, Corvette ZR1 and Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution Evo), eventually seeing them race against aeroplanes on a runway.
Not a bad start to the show.
It looks like they’re having fun in the show, especially Francis Bourgeois, who’s excitement really comes across on screen which is kind of infectious.
Watching the show I think it’s better to think of it as a brand new show, rather than another series of The Grand Tour. The biggest part of the original is the old presenters, their personality and their chemistry…None of which you can replicate.
The old series’ has a bit of a sense of jeopardy, a bit of edge, a bit of ‘this is all going to go wrong’, so we’ll see if this is going to be able to do that, if it wants to, or if not how entertaining the series can be.
The old presenters do make a few cameo appearances. Jeremy Clarkson is in the first episode, and Hammond and May are in other episodes in the series.
I would say that it’s worth watching. If you liked the old series’ then you might like this one too, providing you’re not expecting the exact same personalities as the previous series.
I look forward to checking out the rest of the series, which I’ll be watching next week. The whole box set is available to watch on Amazon Prime now, and this series is 6 episodes long.
