Men’s Fashion Tips – Winter Coat & Jacket Buying Guide

Canada Goose Jackets For Winter

UPDATED FOR 2016

Brrr it’s getting cold in ‘ere! Winter is here, or coming, depending on where in the world you live and when you’re reading this post 😉 One way or another you’ll be experiencing the depths of winter sometime soon, so you’ll need a winter coat or jacket to get you through a few horrible months of the miserable British winter weather.

Buying a good winter coat is not only important for the first year you purchase it, but it can become a good investment piece, lasting a good few winters before you need to splash out and buy another. With that said, investing in a good jacket is not only worth it because you’ll be getting much better quality which will be noticeable when you wear it, as well as it lasting longer than a cheap and cheerful coat.

My winter coat and jacket collection has grown over the past few years, and I have quite a few of the bases covered with quite the selection, including my Pull and Bear Parka, Barbour Chelsea Quilted Jacket, Adrian Hammond padded jacket and of course the daddy of them all, my Canada Goose.

The Canada Goose Is Hands Down The Best – Buy One!

I would love to advise you to go out and spend near £600 on a Canada Goose jacket, but things are not that simple. In my opinion if you need a coat for a harsh winter there is simply no better than a Canada Goose. I got a Chilliwack Parka a few years ago, and it was a godsend for 2 bad winters we had. It does come with a few problems in the UK though. For example, last winter was so mild I never actually wore it! They are amazing for harsh weather, and if it’s freezing cold, if there’s wind chill, or if it’s snowing, then wearing one will keep you toasty. However if it’s a mild winter and not really sub-zero temperatures, you’ll literally be sweating in one; They are not really designed for mildly-cold winters. There’s the price too, at around £600 it is rather expensive.

So what are the other bits of fashion advice  when looking to buy a winter coat this year? Well there are a few options, and I will go into the different styles of jackets which are available at the moment.

Christmas 2015 Clothing Presents

christmas-2015-presents-happy-socks-bjorn-borg

Happy Boxing Day (Observed) 😛

If you have a job then you’ll be happy that today is counted as a Bank Holiday in the UK, so you’ll of probably had today off, however I broke up from work so I was off anyway. I have bought a few things online in the sales, but since today is a Bank Holiday there’s no deliveries, so I have to wait a little longer.

I got a few really nice things for Christmas this year, including a few tops, some loungewear and socks and boxers. I am really into socks at the moment, I think different colours are so cool and can add to an outfit in the smallest of details.

I got yet more Happy Socks (and I have even more coming!) which I love. I am in some kind of transition with socks, and I’ll pretty much be throwing all my old ones away and replace them with brand new ones this year. I have a few classic black and grey pairs which I’ll keep, other than that, Happy Socks will be my new daily wear. A few new pairs of boxer shorts are never a bad thing, and I got some from Bjorn Borg which I have always liked.

Men’s Style Advice – Fashion Friday No.9

Fashion Friday - Men's Fashion Tips Number 9

Did you miss it last week? Well it’s back! Fashion Friday no.9 is here 🙂 I have been running so many features on the blog lately I thought I would give this one a bit of a break, and it’s always been thought of as a weekly/bi-weekly feature, so I can focus on the best men’s clothing to give the best fashion tips out there.

Nudie Jeans Adrian Parka – £460 – here

New Look Knitted Jumper – £19.99 – here

Happy socks – £8 – here

Cheap Monday Dictionary T-Shirt – £25 – here

Armani 2-Pack T-Shirts – £26 – here

Burton Bomber Jacket – £14 – here

Superdry Leather Jacket – £200 – here

Selected Homme Merino Knit – £55 – here

First up is this amazingly warm Adrian parka from Nudie Jeans. We’ve had miserable weather in the last few days, fog and rain, and it’s a reminder that colder times are here and winter is right around the corner. The parka fits the bill with a detachable faux fur hood, water repellent outer and padded, quilted inner which will keep you toasty.

The knit from New Look is a contrasting white and black style jumper made from a acrylic-mix and is only £20. A great buy if you’re looking to up your knitwear game for the months ahead and are on a budget looking for something more colourful than a plain jumper.

I still love socks, and Happy Socks have been doing some pretty good designs. one of their latest is their black and white paisley design which I think looks really good, and will add something to any outfit.

Layering is definitely an option when it comes to men’s fashion in Autumn or Winter, and there’s plenty of ways to do it with these next few items. The Cheap Monday T-Shirt is a cool printed white top with a dictionary print. It shows the definition of the words Over My Dead Body, which is över min döda kropp in Swedish, the phrase Cheap Monday uses. House Of Fraser have a 2-pack of Armani tees for only £26. I love these fitted style of tees to use as an under shirt which can be essential to wear under a knit if you don’t want to wear a shirt. The finish off the layering there’s a good deal on this Burton bomber, for only £14 you get this zip-up, which you can layer with a shirt and jacket.

Speaking of jackets, leather is always a good choice when you want to look cool without being cold. Superdry have recently came up with this jacket, the Real Hero Biker jacket. If you want to look casual and have an edge while still looking smart, this is the way to go.

Last up is this knit from Selected Homme. It’s a V-neck knit in 100% fine merino wool in light grey, which is a really good colour which will work with almost everything. At only £55 it’s a good price for 100% merino wool from a good brand.

That is the end of this week’s Fashion Friday. As always you can send me tips on Twitter, I am @Michael84Blog, and you can read last week’s Fashion Friday No.8 here.

Fashion Friday Edit: Men’s Style Tips No.5

mens-style-blog-fashion-tips-5

It’s time for another Friday Fashion Edit, which features more fashion advice and my favourite picks from brands and shops around the globe. This week I have gone all Autumn style, with an abundance of jackets and knits designs to keep you warm in the cold weather that’s right around the corner. This is what I have for this week’s edition.

Jack Wills Donalson Cashmere Knit – £129

Reiss 1971 Vice Jacket – £265

Benetton Long Sleeve T-Shirt – £30

Jockey Printed Y-Front Trunks – £18

Armani Watch £104

Hugo Boss Quilted Jacket – £230

Benetton V-Neck Knit – £19

Tommy Hilfiger Knit – £85

First up is a knit from Uni students favourite brand, Jack Wills. Whether you’re at Uni or not, this 100% cashmere knit is soft to touch and will not look out of place anywhere. I love the colour, just because the dark nights are coming doesn’t mean you have to dress for the dark, and add some light and colour to your look with this top.

Part of the 1971 collection is this jacket from Reiss. It’s not a full blown winter coat, but it comes complete with a shearling collar for added warmth, with a mottled pattern throughout it adds texture to your look.

The Benetton long sleeve tee is perfect for layering, and comes in a red colour which you may not already have in your wardrobe.

One of the best bargains I have seen for a long time is this Emporio Armani watch. I love the minimal look when it comes to watches, Analogue is a must, and I do love a leather strap. This comes with all of the above, it’s a fashion label watch at an amazing price of £104 at ASOS. If I didn’t already have so many watches I would buy this. Get it while you can at this price.

Jockey have been making underwear since 1934 and having a few pair myself I know they’re really nice to wear. They have come up with a limited edition pair which are emblazoned with adverts dating back to 1876. I think these look really cool and quite literally make a statement. Coming in at £18 they’re affordable, and they will be a unique pair of underwear in your drawer.

If you’re thinking about a winter coat then this brand new BOSS Orange quilted jacket has to be considered. It’s available in navy and black, I’ve selected it in the navy. It’s waterproof and looks like it will stand the test of time throughout this Autumn/Winter and many more.

If you’ve not got many knits or sweats you’re in luck, I have added this Benetton one to the fashion tips too. It’s available in a few colour, including grey which will work well for layering with a shirt. It’s available right now for only £19 down from £27.

Last up and it’s another knit, this time from Tommy Hilfiger. It’s a cashmere blend which means it’s not 100% cashmere, in fact only 8%. Usually I would not recommend such a mix unless it was at an unbelievable price, however this is mixed with Pima cotton, which is a super soft cotton. This combination will result in an ultra soft knit, which you’ll be able to wear casually with a tee or dress it up for a smart casual look with a shirt.

That’s your lot for this week’s Fashion Friday. Remember you can always look back and check last week’s edition, and As always, you can send your tips to me on Twitter at @Michael84Blog 😉

White EA7 Emporio Armani T-Shirt

Featuring:

ea7-armani-white-tshirt-1

For Easter I got this cool white EA7 Emporio Armani T-Shirt. If you don’t know, EA7 is the sportswear arm of Armani, and is more of a sports-luxe kind of fashion. I like this tee, it’s very comfortable and a clean minimal look which I prefer these days. The branding is small and simple but elegant, with a small silver logo to the breast.

The summer is coming (well we’ve had 3 days of warm-ish sun) so I will look forward to wearing this top.

From The Sales: House Of Fraser Fashion

Featuring: , ,

lacoste-grey-polo-2015-2

I picked up a couple of things from the House Of Fraser sale. I like HOF, they do a lot of brands, from high street fashion to the more high end of the fashion brands which I like. I picked up a pair of chinos by Mango, some Armani Jeans and a Lacoste Polo Shirt.

Lacoste Polo Shirts are timeless. I had a few when I was a teen, and they are as great then as they are now. They usually cost around £60, so when you find these in the sale they are worth the money because they don’t go out of style and the brand is well known for their Polo Shirts. I got this grey one for £37.50, a tad more than half price which is a good deal.

A tradition of the Christmas sales is getting at least one pair of Armani Jeans. I love them so much, they always fit well and I especially like the softer denim they do. These are made from their comfort material as they call it, and really are super soft. It’s a black wash, which I don’t have too many of so this pair appealed to me quite a bit. They were around £100 which is a reasonable price.

Even though I love jeans, particularly dark washes like black and indigo, I’ve wanted to get into more colour in the past few years. I got a lot of colour chinos and denim from Monkee Genes last year, and wrote about this in my coloured denim guide. It’s sometimes thought of a more summer look, but I like to brighten up an outfit and wear other colours. This pair of jeans are a nice colour and are a slim stretch fit. I have bought another pair in an off-white colour which I am waiting for. They are currently £22.

Fragrance Review – Emporio Armani Remix He

Featuring:

Emporio Armani Remix Review

For this week’s aftershave review I want to talk about a classic, Emporio Armani Remix for men. It was released in 2006 and I got it around that time, and it holds many memories, and is a really nice smell. I’ve recently learned that it’s now been discontinued, which is a real shame.

The bottle is an unusual style of bottle, a tall plastic cylinder with the text in a disco style, denoting that this is very much a fun type of fragrance. The scent is so welcoming, it’s warm and floral, but possesses light fruity, spicy notes which are accompanied by a green fresh style making it really inviting. It’s a very versatile fragrance, and hard to pin down on one specific occasion you’d wear this, in fact it will work in almost every situation. It’s strong enough to get you noticed, however it does not overpower you.

I really like this one, it holds some memories but it’s also a nice all rounder which may not make your top 10, but will always be a pleasant scent, it’s just too bad that it’s been discontinued.

Best season to wear – All Rounder
Scent type – Floral, Light spicy, Fruity
Age Recommendation – 18+
Best Worn – Day Wear, Night, Casuak

Top Notes – Basil, Cardamom, Bergamot

Middle Notes – Lily of the valley, Mace

Base Notes – Vetiver, Licorice, White musk
