One of the newest cocktail bars in Newcastle is The Mad House. I went a few months back for the first time, and it was pretty good.
It’s certainly a bar with a difference in Newcastle, and the only one where you can sit with your mates at a bath on a neon toilet seat while you drink.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally had some time to write about when I went to The Mad House. I actually went on New Year’s Eve, so a fair few months ago. It was a spur of the moment thing to go there, but I am glad I did.
I had heard about the place and it was quirky, and wanted to try it out.
The bar is set out like the inside of a house, a crazy or mad house as the name suggests. In a normal bar you’d expect to have tables, but this one has tables with a difference.
The house theme is throughout the bar. So every table has a different theme, which is a room in the house.
You’ve got the kitchen, complete with cooker tables. There’s the living room, complete with TV and living room furniture. There’s the bathroom which has a clear table top which is on top of a bath filled with balls. Of course your seat is a neon coloured toilet seat too. There’s even a garden, complete with garden swing.
When we went, we were in the kitchen. I was sat at the cooker and I got myself a cocktail.
Even the cocktails have quirky names. I got myself a ‘moo moo‘, which is of course a woo woo anywhere else. There was also things such as a strawberry duckeri, obviously a play on strawberry daiquiri.
They were served in pretty cool glasses too. Mine was a milk bottle, and the strawberry duckeri even has a small plastic duck swimming on the top.
If you’re not into cocktails, they do beer and a couple of other “normal” drinks if that’s how you want to go.
In terms of prices it’s in line with cocktail bars in Newcastle, so you’re looking at around £7 – £10 per drink.
Overall it’s a good night out. I am glad there’s something that’s a little bit different in Newcastle, and it’s definitively worth experiencing. The bar is quite small so if you really want to go I’d advise booking a table so you’re not disappointed.
