Spain won the 2026 World Cup!
Vamos España! Campeones Del Mundo!
The World Cup is finally over, and my team, Spain have only gone and won it. What an epic 6 weeks it has been. I can’t believe it’s all over, and of course can’t believe that Spain have won it for a second time.
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time with a goal from substitute Ferran Torres.
Here’s how it went down.
The final was a game you would expect. Spain kept the ball well, dominated possession and the game in general, having 20 or so shots on target in the 90 minutes to Argentina’s 0 (yes, zero).
Argentina did not really play football, sat back and made it a “you have to beat us” kind of game. Messi sat on the halfway line waiting for balls to be played out to him, and Argentina just dug in for most of the game.
As with all teams who play this way against Spain, it’s very hard to break down. Spain tried, but couldn’t break through. Enzo Fernandez was sent off at the 90th or so minute, and to extra time we went.
Spain made a few changes at the back end of the game, including brining on Ferran Torres and Nico Williams. It would be that which ultimately make the difference.
Nico Williams scored a goal in the first half of extra time which was then ruled out. Mikel Merino slightly stood on a defenders foot. It was a really soft foul for the referee to give away, and Spain had to go again.
But that’s exactly what they did.
Immediately in the 2nd half of extra time a ball was played into Nico Williams, who headed it back from the far post to Ferran Torres, who scored.
It was great, and ex-players from the 2010 winning team jumped up to celebrate. Sergio Ramos, Xavi Hernandez, Iker Casillas, Fernando Llorente, David Villa, Jesus Navas…They were all there in attendance, as was the Spanish Royal Family.
Argentina finally had to come out to play, had a few chances, but couldn’t make them back.
Spain are World Champions for the 2nd time, and get the second star.
I always remember the win in 2010, and this was kind of similar too. It went to extra time, a player was sent off, and for entertainment sake, it wasn’t great, but we don’t care.
Winning the World Cup is what it’s all about, and sometimes it’s not pretty.
Spain tried to play, and did, but Argentina wasn’t interested in playing football, similar to the fouling Netherlands back in 2010.
So that’s it, mission complete. Spain win the World Cup in 2026 after winning Euro 2024.
Only conceding one goal in the entire tournament, not losing a match, and never going behind in any game. The record breakers keep finding new records to break.
There was also a half time show in the middle, the first time ever. Very American, not something I want in a World Cup final, save that for the Superbowl.

Final Thoughts On Spain At The World Cup
Spain winning the World Cup was brilliant. The best team at the tournament has won the tournament. That doesn’t always happen, but in the previous two, it has.
Spain won Euro 2024 and were the best team. Spain won the 2026 World Cup and were the best team.
One thing I love about it, is that they have once again done it by not shouting about it. Spain just quietly went on about their business, and let everyone else get talked about.
France were brilliant all of the way through the tournament, until they met Spain. Pundits and presenters already had France etched into the World Cup as winners, but they were outclassed by Spain.
A slow start with a draw against Cape Verde shocked many, but if you’re a Spain fan, it’s something we’ve seen before. A weaker opponent on paper makes the game tough, and Spain can’t break them down.
2018 and 2022 Spain went out against weaker opposition (Russia and Morocco) on penalties because they couldn’t break them down after 120 minutes. That happened in the first game.
But Spain grew into the tournament, beating Saudi Arabia and Uruguay and topping the group. A 3-0 win over Austria came next, before beating Portugal 1-0 and Belgium 2-1, both late winners from Mikel Merino.
France came next in the semi final, and a brilliant 2-0 win followed, and a place in the final was booked.
Another tough team to break down, typical dirty play from Argentina, but it was Spain who triumphed, and won the game 1-0 after extra time thanks to Ferran Torres.
Spain: Played 8, won 7, drew 1. Scored 14 goals. Conceded 1 goal.
