La Liga in Spain announced that they were doing a retro weekend which would see them step back in time and celebrate the good old days of football.

Sadly some teams aren’t taking part which is disappointing, with the two giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona being 2 of the teams not taking part.

Still, I had to go ahead and wear a Barca shirt from the past. This is my original Barcelona away shirt from 1997-98.

Even though Barcelona aren’t taking part, I thought it gave a good excuse to wear this shirt. It is my original shirt from 97-98, making this almost 30 years old!

Crazy that it actually fits, but that’s a good thing of the 90’s…We wore things baggy, especially football shirts, and so a lot of my old 90’s shirts still fit me.

I remember seeing this shirt and wanting it, and eventually getting it. I believe I got this one for Christmas, so had to wait a while to finally wear it.

The design is so good, orange and purple, similar colours to that of a previous away shirt in the early 90s.

This one was worn by so many legends… Luis Enrique, Pep Guardiola, Rivaldo, Figo, Nadal and more.

They won a league and cup double in that season, coming off the back of the previous season where they didn’t manage to win the league, despite having Bobby Robson and of course Ronaldo.

Being a Newcastle fan it was of course the season where Barcelona played Newcastle, with Newcastle winning 3-2 at St. James’ Park in an infamous night, where Tino Asprilla scored a memorable hattrick (Barca wore their home shirts).

With all of that said, this week’s Retro Weekend from La Liga looks so good.

It’s not just the teams wearing retro style shirts, the whole experience has been taken into account.

That means all the on-screen graphics for the games played will be a throwback to days of the past, to give it an authentic look.

Even the referees haven’t been forgotten about.

The referees are wearing the patterned shirts they wore in the mid 90’s, memories for any Spanish football fan when watching back in the day on Sky Sports.

What are your thoughts on this?

I think that with the influx of retro style kits, retakes and re-releases we’ve seen in recent seasons, the Premier League in England should get on board with this and do their own version.

There’s no doubt that something like this would go down really well with football fans across England.

I’d love to see Newcastle playing in a retro shirt on the pitch today, the modern game and players wearing shirts from the 90s.
