Spain 2 - 2 Morocco - Dramatic Draw In The World cup

That was dramatic!

Spain are into the last 16 of the World Cup after drawing 2-2 with Morocco, but it wasn’t an easy game to watch!

Morocco took the lead with a goal, a complete mix up with Iniesta and Sergio Ramos lead to them losing the ball around the half way line, the Moroccan Boutaïb was clear through on goal, kept his composure and scored. It only took Spain 5 minutes to get an equaliser, intricate play from Iniesta and Isco, with Isco making it 1-1 going into half time.

It was quite a frustrating game, with Spain controlling possession but not doing much with it, and were left with a few pot shots from distance. Morocco were looking to attack on the counter, and did on a few occasions, with their best chance coming crashing off the bar, it was a warning shot aimed at Spain.

The Morocco won a corner, and scored with a good header, En-Nesyri beating Sergio Ramos in the air, and Morocco took the lead again, 2-1. Spain were pressing for a goal, and had Iago Aspas and Rodrigo on the pitch at this point, trying for the equaliser. Then it came, a short corner was then crossed into the box, and Iago Aspas with a clever flick got the ball in the net. The Referee’s assistant flagged for offside, the decision went to VAR, he was not offside, and the goal was correctly given.

The match ended 2-2, and Spain finished top of the group to set up a last 16 game against Russia in Moscow on Sunday 1st July.

Once again Spain did not play to their full potential. The passing was just that little bit slack, the final ball was not good enough, and the defence was not sharp and seemed to switch off at time, which cost them 2 goals. Diego Costa and David Silva could not get into the game, Isco played well and Iniesta saw a lot of the ball. Spain will need to improve, especially their world renowned passing play if they’re to not get caught out like they have done in the previous two games.
