Portugal 3 - 3 Spain - 15th June 2018

The first big match of the World Cup has lived up to it’s billing, with an epic game! It finished Portugal 3 – 3 Spain, and was a game which had everything.

Portugal started off the better team in the first 5 minutes, with Cristiano Ronaldo winning a penalty against his Real Madrid teammate, Nacho. He scored, and made it 1-1. Busquets played a long ball to Diego Costa who had a lot of work to do up on his own, and managed to bully the Portuguese defence and make it 1-1.

Ronaldo got his second of the game, when he fired a shot straight at David De Gea which he should of saved, instead it went straight through him, right before half time.

Spain came out and were playing well, got a free kick which was floated into the box, Busquets turned provider again heading the ball across the goal for Diego Costa to get his second.

The goal of the game came from Nacho, who scored an absolute thunderbolt which has curl and swerve, hitting it at the ball came to him rising from 20 yards out, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Spain looked to close the game out, and kept the ball very well for the next 25 minutes or so. Pique then gave away a free kick fouling Ronaldo on the edge of the box with only 2 minutes left on the clock. Who stepped up, none other than Ronaldo and scored a fantastic free kick which nobody could have saved, completing his hattrick. The game was thrilling and ended 3-3.

It was one of the best ever first group games, the best ever group games the World Cup has seen, with both teams looking to win it, with great free flowing play. Before the game both teams would have been happy with a draw expecting to win the next two games; Portugal had the lead twice and let it slip, Spain had the lead and almost saw the game out, so both have a case of thinking they should have won, but I think that they’ll bother be happy with the result – Especially because of the turmoil Spain has been going through in the past 5 days.

There are lots of positive for Spain, with lots of players playing very well. Isco was very impressive, Diego Costa, who has struggled for goals with Spain in the past looked sharp and scored twice, Busquets had 2 assists, and David Silva and Andres Iniesta both looked as good as ever.

Earlier in the day Iran beat Morocco scoring a goal in stoppage time, and lead the group, with Portugal and Spain 2nd and 3rd on 1 point each.
