Iran 0 – 1 Spain – A Hard Fought Win For Spain

Wednesday, 20th June, 2018

Spain beat Iran 1-0 In The World Cup 20th June 2018

Everyone seems to know the score, we’ve seen it all before…If you’re a Spain fan then you’ll be used to seeing teams not trying to play and only defending, and that’s what happened tonight, but Spain managed to grab a 1-0 win against Iran thanks to a Diego Costa goal in their second World Cup match.

Iran did not play in the first half, had 10 men behind the ball and could rarely even muster a counter attack. They added in some time wasting, really slow play and diving around like they’d been shot to waste as much time as possible, and made the beautiful game as ugly as can be.

I’ve watched Spain countless times over the years, and it’s how the lesser nations usually play in qualifiers, something you wouldn’t necessarily see in a World Cup game, especially to the extent that Iran were playing with. There were 21 players in the Iran half for a lot of the first half, 11 Iran players and 10 Spain players, with only David De Gea in the Spain half.

The second half came and it was a little more open, and then Diego Costa grabbed a goal, getting in the box as only he does, with a lucky ricochet bouncing back of him into the net. Iran finally started to come out and play, with a few scary moments Spain continued to dominate, with Iran trying to catch them on the break, had a few chances and almost scored with a header which blazed over.

Iran did put the ball in the Spanish net, only for it to be rightly ruled offside from the referee’s assistant, later confirmed by VAR. Spain got their win and 3 points, which was deserved.

It was a surprise to see a start for Lucas Vasquez, who started ahead of Koke who played the last game, and came on later on. Marco Asensio also came on late on, as did Rodrigo.

Overall it was not a brilliant performance from Spain, but they won in the end. The passing was a bit wayward, especially the final ball, Lucas Vasquez did not have a great game, neither did Jordi Alba or Carvajal, both giving the ball away a fair bit and had poor crossing. The highlights were David Silva, Isco, Iniesta and Busquets who ran the game, Sergio Ramos was quite solid coming forward, and Diego Costa was always in and around the play, and eventually got his goal.

Spain will play Morocco on Monday night only needing a point to advance to the last 16.
