Where Can Lionel Messi Go From Barcelona? (And Will He Leave)

Lionel Messi rocked the football world a few days ago when he requested to leave Barcelona. There’s been rumours of Messi leaving Barcelona over the years, but this one could be the one.

But where can he go from one of the biggest clubs in the world?

Here’s a look at some of the clubs he could possibly go to, if he leaves Barcelona at all.

Manchester City

The club with the biggest spending power in England, Manchester City looks the most likely English club to be able to sign him. They have Pep Guardiola who used to be the man in charge at Barca, so knows Messi. City also have other personnel such as Txiki Begiristain who was at Barca with Pep and Messi.

They are one of the only clubs in England who could afford and tempt him.

The other big budget club in England is Chelsea. Roman Abramovich would like to get the player to Chelsea, however the club has already spent a lot of money on players such as Werner, Chilwell, and Ziyech, with Kai Havertz looking likely to join too.

So it would appear Chelsea will probably not try to sign Messi.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan could be another destination. They finished 2nd in the league and runners up in the Europa League this season, and have spent big recently. There’s special tax laws in Italy to tempt world class foreign players into the league, and that could be a good reason to play in Serie A.

Another Italian team Messi could join is champions Juventus. He’ll benefit from the tax laws, play for one of the biggest clubs in Europe and challenge for titles. It would also give the world the chance to see Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same team.

Finalists of the Champions League this year and known to spend big, PSG are one of the few clubs that could easily afford Messi. A front 3 of Messi, M’Bappe and Neymar sounds great, but the league is not Serie A or the Premier League, and would surely be a step down.

Newell’s Old Boys

Could this spell the return of Messi to Newell’s Old Boys? They are his boyhood club in Argentina, and there’s always been that sentimental thing that he could end his career there.

However I think that Messi has a few seasons in him before he moves back there, if that’s where he ends his career.

USA/MLS, Middle East Or The Rest Of The World

I don’t think Messi will go to the MLS, at least not now. The same can be said for the Middle East clubs of Doha/UAE or Saudi. The MLS couldn’t afford him, and I think it’s too soon for a Middle East move, if that would even interest him.

Will Messi Stay At Barcelona?

This could all just be a play to get a new deal at Barcelona. Most media are suggesting that it’s not the case and Messi “definitely wants to leave, this time“, but he wouldn’t be the first to request a transfer only to sign a new contract.

When Does Messi’s Contract Expire?

Lionel Messi’s current contract expires in 2021. That means he can leave Barcelona for free from next summer.

He has requested a meeting with the Barcelona hierarchy to discuss leaving Barca. He is said to have a clause in his current contract that will allow him to leave a year early for free, i.e. Summer 2020 (now). Barca are said to be disputing this, and with a โ‚ฌ700M release clause in his contract, may want that or not let him leave.

It’s became a case of cat and mouse with Messi reportedly wanting a meeting to request to leave, with the bosses agreeing to meet but only to discuss a new deal.

Where Do I Think He Will Go?

I don’t think he will come to the Premier League, I just don’t see it. South American players like Ronaldo (R9), Ronaldinho, Rivaldo have all came and gone in football to never play in England. European superstars like Xavi, Iniesta, Zidane Maldini and Buffon also never played in England.

I just can’t see Messi in England week in, week out.

That only leaves PSG or a move to Italy. I can see him in Serie A, I think Inter or Juve would be the best football move. PSG obviously have so much money along with Neymar and M’Bappe, so I wouldn’t rule that out.

Although so many people are speculating that “this is it” and he will definitely leave, I think Messi will stay at Barcelona, and even sign a new deal. Perhaps in a few more years he will go, maybe back to Argentina or a move outside Europe’s top leagues.
