Lopetegui Sacked - Spain in Turmoil before the World Cup

Yes, it’s turmoil in Spain, only 24 hours before the World Cup, and 48 hours before the first Spain game.

Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as Spain manager. It all started on Tuesday, when Lopetegui and Real Madrid shocked the football World, confirming that after the World Cup Lopetegui would leave his post as the Spain national manager, and join Real Madrid.

Less than 24 hours later, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, the RFEF, announced that they’d sacked manager Julen Lopetegui. RFEF president Luis Rubiales stated that he only found out about Real Madrid and Lopetegui 5 minutes before the press release.

It was a shock to Spain, to the football World, and to me. Lopetegui only signed a new contract which would see him take charge until the end of Euro 2020 a few weeks ago in May, and now he’s gone.

Fernando Hierro, who’s been in the ranks in the Spanish national team and RFEF for years is taking charge of the team for the World Cup. It has been announced that Carlos Marchena, Julián Calero and Juan Carlos Martínez Castrejón have also joined the Spain coaching staff.

The next permanent manager has not been announced, could it be Hierro? It will probably come down to the team’s performance in the World Cup.

Other managers who’ve been mentioned to take control permanently are Albert Celades, Arsene Wenger, Rafa Benitez and Luis Enrique, some even mentioning a return for Vicente Del Bosque.

How will Spain do in the World Cup? It will depend on the players. If they all support the decision of the RFEF then they’ll be able to play well, and if they’re in revolt, it could be quite bad. In the previous World Cup, Spain got eliminated at the group stage, after losing their first game against the Netherlands 5-1.

Spain will play Portugal in their opening game on Friday evening.
