Spain vs Finland & France: Spain Squad

Friday, 15th March, 2013

The next 2 games will surely seal the fate of Spain and France’s chances of automatically qualifying for the World Cup; They will meet each other in France in their group game for qualification for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. The first match ended 1-1 with France scoring a dramatic equaliser in the 4th minute of added time, from Juanfran’s costly mistake.

Of course there are other games in the group, and Spain will have to play Finland first at home and a win is absolutely vital.

The Spain squad is once again without Fernando Torres and Javi Martinez, and Del Bosque has gone for only 1 recognised “number 9” striker in the form of Alvaro Negredo. No places for Soldado, Llorente, Adrián or in form Michu who still has not received a call up. I think only having 1 striker in an entire squad is a little light, and Negredo probably will not start. This means that record goalscorer David Villa could make a start for Spain, he scored for Barca this week and is finding his form again.

Cesc is in the squad despite not playing for Barca in the Champions League this week, No place for the versitile Javi Martinez but there is for Isco and to my surprise Javi Garcia.

Puyol is injured so is not included, and Albiol is. The back four will probably be Arbeloa, Pique, Ramos and Jordi Alba.

Iker Casillas is also still injured which gives a call up to David De Gea from Man U, with the other two ‘keepers being Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina who was out injured last week for Liverpool, which makes me wonder who will start.

Full Squad

Goalkeepers: Victor Valdes (Barcelona), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), David de Gea (Man Utd)

Defenders: Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Raul Albiol (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Nacho Monreal (Arsenal), Jordi Alba (Barcelona)

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Xavi (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Javi Garcia (Man City), Isco (Malaga), Jesus Navas (Sevilla), David Silva (Man City), Juan Mata (Chelsea),

Forwards : David Villa (Barcelona), Pedro (Barcelona), Alvaro Negredo (Sevilla),

My Starting 11

Reina; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Jordi Alba; Xabi Alonso, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro; David Villa

David Silva may start instead of Pedro, but everytime Pedro seems to play for Spain he does amazingly well. Mata has also been one of the players of the season, so how can you not start him?

Spain play at home to Finland on Friday 22nd March and away to France on Tuesday 26th March.
