Spain 2018 World Cup Squad Announcement

Today was the day, later than most of the other teams, Spain announced the squad which will be going to Russia in the World Cup this Summer. The squad is the following:

Goalkeepers: David de Gea (Manchester United), Pepe Reina (Napoli), Kepa Arrizabalaga (Athletic Bilbao).

Defenders: Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Nacho Monreal (Arsenal), Alvaro Odriozola (Real Sociedad), Nacho Fernandez (Real Madrid), Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea).

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Isco (Real Madrid), Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), David Silva (Manchester City), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid), Koke (Atletico Madrid).

Forwards: Marco Asensio (Real Madrid), Iago Aspas (Celta Vigo), Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid), Rodrigo Moreno (Valencia), Lucas Vazquez (Real Madrid).

Asensio and Vazquez are named as forwards by most, but are seen more as midfielders, which means there’s only 3 real strikers. Not a big surprise.

What do you think of the squad?

Monreal, Vasquez, Odriozola, Nacho All Included

The biggest 4 surprises for me are Monreal, Vasquez, Odriozola, and Nacho. Monreal has not had a great season, Odrizola is young, and Nacho and Vasquez are not the first names on the team sheet at Real Madrid.

These aren’t huge surprises for the coach, Lopetegui, who’s called all of these players up in recent times, overlooking more established stars and bigger names.

No Places For Morata, Fabregas, Pedro, Marcos Alonso, Bartra, Sergi Roberto

The biggest talking point has been the decision for not taking Alvaro Morata. Although he’s been out of form, he had a good start to the season, but hasn’t played for Spain since the November 2017 squad.

Pedro and Fabregas have been overlooked for most Spain squads in the past 2 years, with Fabregas’s last appearance being in 2016, Pedro has only played 4 games for Spain since the end of 2016. Bartra also missed out, and Marcos Alonso, who managed to break into the squad in March, also misses out.

Javi Martinez seems to be a forgotten man, but has had injuries. He hasn’t played since 2014, where he was in the World Cup squad 4 years ago.

Other’s who’ve missed out are Callejon, Vitolo and Deulofeu, but were probably never considered to be going with the squad.

Lopetegui adds to the 2018 World Cup Squad

Lopetegui Adds 7 Young Players To The Squad

Lopetigui has added an additional 7 young players to the squad which will train with the squad, and possibly compete in the friendly games which are arranged before the World Cup. The players called up are Iñaki Williams, Yeray, Vallejo, C. Solar, Unai Núñez, Oyarzabal and Rodri.

My Thoughts

I would have definitely taken Marcos Alonso, he’s had a good season once again, scoring goals and being a big player for Chelesa for 2 seasons, he’s been very consistent. The same cannot be said about Monreal, and I’d swap these two players.

I would have liked to have seen Febregas go, although this was never going to happen. He hasn’t been in Lopetegui’s plans, and hasn’t been considered as important for Chelsea as previous seasons. But when he’s played, he usually plays well, and he is still a top player. The same can be said for Pedro, although he’s made a couple of squads, and usually does well for Spain.

It’s a weird one for all of those players, because they all play for Chelsea, and all miss out. Azpilicueta has also been overlooked so much while being at Chelsea, thankfully he’s been included in the squad, and could play a vital role with his versatility.

Possible Spain Starting 11 vs Portugal In The Opening Game

It’s always important to get off with a good start, and I think picking the absolute best players is the way to go, it’s no time for experimenting. I would go with the following 11:

De Gea, Jordi Alba, Carvajal, Pique, Ramos; Busquets, Iniesta, Koke, Isco, Silva; Diego Costa.

In the midfield I have 5, I think 4 will definitely start, with Koke possibly not starting and swapping with anyone from the rest.

The countdown is on! Only 23 days to go!
