Heartbreak for Spain!

I watched the game tonight, and with Spain 1-0 up with 3 minutes of added time, France scored in the 4th minute of time added on and got a 1-1 draw. It was a draw, but felt like a defeat.

Spain played their now usual 4-3-3 formation, sometimes called 4-6-0 with no recognised striker, aka “number 9”. The front three were Silva, Fabregas and Pedro who scored a hat trick on Friday night.

Spain played their usual brilliant and possessive football in the first half, with over 70% possession most of the time. Spain got a corner and Sergio Ramos hit the post, the ball came back in and he had a second chance and smashed the ball in. France spent most of the first half kicking players, and David Silva went off and Santi Cazorla came on.

Pedro, who had quite a quiet game, won a penalty with only a few minutes of the first half remaining, after a foul from Koscielny who got booked with a really bad, rash and late challenge. Cesc Febregas stepped up but missed, Lloris saved.

So to the second half, and Arbeloa went off injured, and to my surprise Juanfran came on in his home stadium the Vicente Calderón where he plays for Atletico Madrid. It was a bit of a surprise, with the more experienced Albiol and Javi Martinez on the bench, as well as Monreal who has more caps despite being younger.

With 93 minutes played Santi Cazorla had the ball in the French corner, then lost the ball and France began to attack. Juanfran then intercepted the ball but quickley gave it away, France broke and subsitute Giroud scored from a Ribery cross with the last touch of the game.

France played slightly better than Spain in the 2nd half, and created a few chances. Spain did not play at their best in the 2nd half, and did not dominate the game like they usually do. The Fabregas penalty was a crucial miss, and strange subs such as Torres for Iniesta and Juanfran for Arbeloa, lead to “Juanfran” being a Trending Topic on Twitter worldwide!

It does leave questions over the Spanish defence, with only a few injuries tonight Busquets played at the back with Sergio Ramos, which left Xabi Alonso alone in his role. Looking back Spain may be should have gone for Javi Martinez instead of Fabregas, and pushed Iniesta further forward with Pedro and Silva.

Grattis Sverige!

Well done to Sweden! They played their hardest game of their qualifying campaign tonight, they were away to Germany who put 6 past Ireland on Friday night. Germany scored 4 tonight, making it 10 goals scored in 2 games…But that is not the end of the story. Germany were 4-0 up, but Sweden battled back, and amazingly the game ended 4-4!!! I did not see the game, but it sounded like a real 8 goal thriller!

Northern Ireland Almost Upset Portugal

Northern Ireland were 1-0 up against Portugal for most of the game, but Portugal scored and it finished 1-1. Still a great result for N.Ireland, but so close to a memorable win.

The Farce that is England

England are usually not too far away from a farce, but even they cannot be blamed for the result tonight; There was no result, as the game was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. The roof of the stadium was not closed, as Poland did not want it to be closed, the heavens opened and then it was too late, and the pitch was unplayable. They delayed making a decision twice, but then they did, and postponed the game. You have to feel sorry for the fans in that situation, I hope they the Polish FA have to pay for the fans or something!

The game will now be played tomorrow at 4pm (UK time)
