Surface Neo Announced - First thoughts from Michael 84
First look at the Microsoft Surface Neo

A couple of days ago Microsoft had an event, and showed the world what’s coming in the very near future: Their latest devices, the Surface Neo and Surface Duo, both coming around Christmas 2020.
They look brilliant!

Just to get into the bare bones of what these devices are – The Surface Neo is a tablet, and the Duo is a smartphone. But not just any tablet or phone.

Their party piece is that they’ve got dual screens. This is not just a novelty party piece, I think it will be loved by many.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Neo and Duo.

Surface Duo Announced - First impressions from Michael 84
The Surface Duo (Smartphone)

First of all, it’s not the first time we’re seeing two screens. It seems as this will be the future, or actually present. There’s companies like Huawei and Samsung exploring the vision, with other brands too. Their implementation is not only a folding device, but a folding screen. As we’ve seen, this can present a whole lot of issues with these things breaking.

Microsoft has gone the other way, keeping the folding idea, but with a hinge, and two screens which are independent. In my opinion, this is key.

When it comes to two screens, I’ve been using a dual screen desktop setup for years. I honestly couldn’t imagine anything else, it’s just brilliant. When you want to be productive you can be, and it makes life so much easier. When you want one screen of work and the other of video or YouTube, it’s simple.

Having two separate and dedicated screens is the way to go. Yes, you can “snap” windows, but in my opinion, it just isn’t the same as 2 separate screens. Microsoft is now bringing this kind of productivity to phones and tablets.

Here’s some tech specs of each device, which are a little bit scarce at the moment, with some possibly changing.

Microsoft Surface Neo Spec

  • 2x 9″ screens
  • 5.6mm thick (each side)
  • Around 680g in weight
  • 360 degree hinge
  • USB-C
  • Windows 10X

Microsoft Surface Duo Spec

  • 2x 5.6″ screens
  • Snapdragon 855 Chipset
  • 4.8mm thick (each side)
  • 360 degree hinge
  • USB-C
  • Android OS

Both devices will be compatible with the new Surface Pen, which is a flatter pen, and can be magnetically attached to the devices. A keyboard can be used on the Neo, which sits on half of one of the screens, leaving you with a full screen, and part of the screen it’s resting on to use for additional features (like the Asus Zenbook duo).

Release Date And Price

There are no details on price yet, and the release date for the Surface Neo and Duo is set for Holidays 2020, which is around Christmas time if you’re in the UK.

My Thoughts On The Surface Neo And Duo

I think that the dual screen tablet is a brilliant idea. I can see this being used in leisure, such as watching YouTube, Amazon or Netflix, while browsing on the web or using apps. It can also be used in for work, and it should improve workflow quite a bit. You should be able to ‘stretch’ your screen to use the same program in the 2 screens, and also run 2 programs independently.

In terms of a multi-screen setup, I think that this is a better implementation than the folding screen. There’s still plenty of room for single screen devices, in fact I would prefer this on the phone. The sad fact is that for a mobile device you want in your pocket, any kind of dual screen is likely to be too thick.

For a table or bag device, such as a tablet, I think this works.

I’m excited to see this get released, all we need now is a price.

Also announced at the Microsoft Event were the new Surface Pro 7 tablet, new Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Earbuds. The Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Pro 7 are both released on 22nd October this year.
