Japan 3 – 4 Italy: Confederations Cup – What A Thriller!

Thursday, 20th June, 2013

The best game of the tournament so far, it was worth staying up ’till 1AM for, Italy vs Japan. The game ended 4-3 and Italy ran out winners, and have qualified along with Brazil for the semi finals of the Confederations Cup, both will meet up on Saturday and battle it out for top spot.

But the game last night was simply amazing, end to end, goals, penalties, posts hit, it had everything. Japan took a surprise 2-0 lead, the first coming from the spot from Honda, then Kagawa made it 2-0. De Rossi scored for Italy just before half time, and in the 2nd half Italy took control of the game for a while, Uchida tried to cut out a cross and put the ball in his own net, then Mario Balotelli scoring with a penalty to make it 3-2 to Italy.

Japan then pressed on, had some great possesion, hit the post and finally made a breakthrough on 69 minutes with a header from a free kick scored by Okazaki.

Italy were not to be denied, hitting the post themselves, and with only 4 minutes to play Giovinco scored a goal putting Italy 4-3 ahead. Japan still pressed on, won a free kick and then put the ball in the net, unfortunately the goal was correctly disallowed for offside.

It was such a great game of football, a brilliant advert for the Confederations Cup.
