iPad Mini Announced: UK Price, Availability And Info Here

Tech Blog
Tuesday, 23rd October, 2012

It’s been speculated for months, years in fact, but back when the original iPad was around the late Steve Jobs critically slammed smaller tablets, and said Apple would never release such a thing. It’s 23rd October 2012 and guess what, it’s (almost) here. Today Apple announced (amongst other things) their latest “innovation”, an iPad mini.

The tablet looks really sleek, thinner, lighter and obviously smaller than an iPad. The screen size is 7.9″ diagonal, but still retains the same resolution as the iPad 2,  1024 x 768 resolution. This is quite critical, meaning all the current apps will be able to work on the mini ‘out of the box’. It packs the dual core A5 processor and an impressive 10 hour battery, the same as the other iPads. Similarly to the iPhone 5, it comes in black and slate or white and silver colours.

One thing which is interesting is the number of options available, which is the same as it’s bigger brother. A lot of people speculated that there would be only one or two models, and this would be seen as a more budget tablet than the bigger one, but there are in fact the same configurations and options; With 16,32 and 64GB of storage available in either WIFI only or WIFI+Cellular, LTE (4G) is supported.

iPad Mini WIFI Only
Height: 200 mm (7.87 inches)
Width: 134.7 mm (5.3 inches)
Depth: 7.2 mm (0.28 inches)
Weight: 308 g (0.68 pounds)

iPad Mini WIFI+Cellular
Height: 200 mm (7.87 inches)
Width: 134.7 mm (5.3 inches)
Depth: 7.2 mm (0.28 inches)
Weight: 312 g (0.69 pounds)

It comes with a 1.2MP camera on the front with 720p video, and a 5MP camera on the rear with 1080p recording. Externally there is everything you have come to expect, with the new lightning connector which debuted on the iPhone 5.

Price & Availability

For the UK you can pre-order from this Friday, 26th October 2012 and get it a week later on Friday 2nd November 2012. You will be able to buy it from an Apple store near you on Friday 2nd November which is the launch day (providing they have stock!).
Note that the WiFi+Cellular models will ship approx. 2 weeks after. Note 2: The iPad Mini cellular uses a nano sim, the same as an iPhone 5 and not the micro sim found in the other iPads and iPhones.

32GB £349
64GB £429

Wi-Fi + Cellular

The iPad gets a makeover

If you bought the “new iPad” aka retina display iPad recently, or even 7 short months ago when it was released, you probably wont want to read on…

Apple also announced an update to their iPad, calling this the 4th generation iPad. It’s quite un-noticable if you visit their site, as it only lists the new iPad with the iPad 2, which pretty much makes the 3rd generation obsolete. It’s pretty much a refresh, not too much has changed, a newer improved A6X CPU along with the new lightning connector, other than that nothing to mention. If I bought the 3rd (current) generation iPad I would be very angry right about now!

As with the Mini, these can be pre-ordered on Friday with shipping on 2nd November, or buy in store on that date. A 2 week wait for the WiFi+Cellular models, and the pricing and configuation remains the same as the previous generation.

Apple also announced it’s new 13″ retina display Macbook Pro, and the new iMac which I will write about later.
