Empire TV Show Hits The UK On E4 – Review

Thursday, 30th April, 2015

I saw the adverts and some snippets for a new show, Empire and it looked pretty good. I like reality TV, but to be honest I am getting quite sick of the same old, same old scripted reality which has taken over TV’s in the UK in recent years. I watched it on Tuesday night, and it was really good.

It’s a drama about a music and entertainment company, Empire which is ran by a family, the head of which is the CEO and former rap mogul who started the company with his now ex-wife, who’s just got out of jail. They have three sons, one wanting to be the new head of the company, and the other two artists on the label. The music on the show is all about based around hip hop, and has Timbaland on as producer, as well as a whole host of other hip hop influences. Here’s a little run down of the main family characters:

Lucious Lyon (played by Terrence Howard) is a former drug dealer and CEO of Empire. He’s been diagnosed with ALS and is looking for one of his three sons to take over from him), although he’s kept his condition secret thus far.
Cookie Lyon (played by Taraji P. Henson) His Ex-Wife who wants her piece of the company after just getting out of jail having spent the past 17 years there.
Andre Lyon (played by Trai Byers) is the eldest son and CFO and wants to take over the company
Jamal Lyon (played by Jussie Smollett) is the middle child, the black sheep who is gay and a singer song-writer.
Hakeem Lyon (played by Bryshere Y. Gray) is the fame hungry youngest and the favourite child of Lucious.

So far we’ve learned that Lucious wants to take the company public, Cookie wants her piece of the company and tries to bribe Lucious by saying she will go to the SEC tell disclose that the company was started with drug money, unless he signs over the rights to managing their son Jamal to her, which Lucious agrees to as he does not like the fact he is gay. He has Cookie followed by his assistant Bunkie (who is also Cookie’s cousin) and report everything she’s doing. Bunkie later meets Lucious at his home, and demands 3 million dollars and threatens Lucious. They then meet at a secluded area and Lucious shoots Bunkie in the head. The next day on a boat party Lucious announces that both of his sons would be releasing albums.

After one episode I am hooked! I really like this show, and can’t wait to watch the next episode. It’s been on in America since January this year, and has been the biggest show on their network, it’s also been renewed for a second series which is good since we’ve just had the first episode!

It’s on a Tuesday night at 9PM on E4. You have to watch it next week (and catch up too!)

I’ll definitely have to catch up on this – I’ve seen the trailers but missed the show this week.
