Men’s Fashion Tips – Winter Coat & Jacket Buying Guide

Canada Goose Jackets For Winter

UPDATED FOR 2016

Brrr it’s getting cold in ‘ere! Winter is here, or coming, depending on where in the world you live and when you’re reading this post 😉 One way or another you’ll be experiencing the depths of winter sometime soon, so you’ll need a winter coat or jacket to get you through a few horrible months of the miserable British winter weather.

Buying a good winter coat is not only important for the first year you purchase it, but it can become a good investment piece, lasting a good few winters before you need to splash out and buy another. With that said, investing in a good jacket is not only worth it because you’ll be getting much better quality which will be noticeable when you wear it, as well as it lasting longer than a cheap and cheerful coat.

My winter coat and jacket collection has grown over the past few years, and I have quite a few of the bases covered with quite the selection, including my Pull and Bear Parka, Barbour Chelsea Quilted Jacket, Adrian Hammond padded jacket and of course the daddy of them all, my Canada Goose.

The Canada Goose Is Hands Down The Best – Buy One!

I would love to advise you to go out and spend near £600 on a Canada Goose jacket, but things are not that simple. In my opinion if you need a coat for a harsh winter there is simply no better than a Canada Goose. I got a Chilliwack Parka a few years ago, and it was a godsend for 2 bad winters we had. It does come with a few problems in the UK though. For example, last winter was so mild I never actually wore it! They are amazing for harsh weather, and if it’s freezing cold, if there’s wind chill, or if it’s snowing, then wearing one will keep you toasty. However if it’s a mild winter and not really sub-zero temperatures, you’ll literally be sweating in one; They are not really designed for mildly-cold winters. There’s the price too, at around £600 it is rather expensive.

So what are the other bits of fashion advice  when looking to buy a winter coat this year? Well there are a few options, and I will go into the different styles of jackets which are available at the moment.

Fashion Friday No.13 – Best Menswear This Week

So here we are, back for another Fashion Friday! Autumn is definitely kicking in, the dark nights are coming fast, and it’s definitely getting much, colder! 🙁 Both of these things are bad, but the good part about Autumn is the clothing choices available. Layering is always good, and I can bring out my knits once again for what will most probably be daily wear. For scents to warm things up you can check out the best fragrances for Autumn, but here are my favourite brand new menswear for the week.

I featured the H&M Modern Essentials AW16 on the blog a few weeks ago, and I have selected the stripe wool blend sweatshirt from the collection. My other picks from H&M are the merino wool polo neck jumper in dark grey, along with a blue long sleeve T-shirt. I really love the colour of both of these pieces, the tee brightens up any look, and the grey jumper is a classic piece for any wardrobe for the Autumn.

The Ario knit from Minimum is 100% wool and a really warm chunky type of jumper which looks like it will hold up well in the colder Autumn days and nights to come. I really love the colour for Autumn, it will also transcend into other seasons since the colour is neutral. It’s £100 here. The sonjay bomber jacket is made of polyester so should do well in the rain, and being black will stand up to most things which looking ever stylish. I love the diamond quilted pattern, and it’s yours for £100 here. Last up from Minimum is the tahi shirt, and it’s a good one. 100% Cotton, it’s a check shirt with blue and white checks in a buffalo print style which is something I’ve always loved. The fit looks pretty good, and the white buttons stand out in the design. You can get this for £55 here.

The Seaton shirt is from the Tailored by Solid line and it’s such a great navy blue colour which I’d probably say is almost midnight blue. The contrasting white buttons really stand out which sets off the dark colour. Get it for £50 here. If you’re in need of a cardigan the Dorsk from Tiger of Sweden could be a good option. It’s a zip up rather than the traditional button up, and is made from merino wool. Get it here for £150. Finally another bomber jacket, this one from GANT and is called the Loft. It’s 100% polyester and lightweight but has plenty of insulation to keep you warm. You can get it for £200 here.

From TOPMAN I have picked out this black premium duck down bomber from the LTD collection. It’s warm and could be your next Autumn/Winter coat, with premium features such as real duck down, it’s at a really good price for only £100 here. It is the season for bomber jackets, so here is another from TOPMAN. It comes in black complete with zip up and made from 100% cotton and will work with anything from your wardrobe. Get it for only £25 here. Last up is this sweatshirt, and I love the mint colour for this season. You can pair it with the bomber jacket or another staple colour and it will work. Get it for £35 here.

That’s your lot for this weeks Fashion Friday! As always if you see anything shout me on Twitter at @Michael84Blog and let me know, and you can read more of my men’s style tips over here for ideas on what to pair with these for Autumn.

What’s New At ASOS – 30th September: Michael 84 Edit

Featuring: , ,

whats new at ASOS - 30th September 2014

We’re well into Autumn now, but despite that it’s actually been a very mild one, and if the weather people are to be believed (and we know they’re not) it’s been one of the driest “Since records began” (Their favourite phrase). There’s no need for me to get my Canada Goose out just let, but it may be time to start thinking about layering, or at least getting a couple of new pieces to keep me warm. I had a look at some of the new pieces on offer at ASOS, and here’s five of the best.

Buffalo check was a big thing last autumn, it started out with girls, and moved over to us guys which I like. If you want to get in on the trend earlier this season, then you can pick up a long sleeve Buffalo Check shirt from New Look. For under £20 it’s a shirt which you can wear on a night out, button up or layer with a basic white tee.

If you’re into layering then the dark space dye T-Shirt from Selected could be a good fit, the fabric is soft to touch, and the dye of the shirt gives it a bit more dimension than a standard solid colour. For street wear lovers, You can’t go wrong with something from Adidas Originals, this white colour shirt features the Adidas Originals “The Brand With Three Stripes” print to the front.

If you’re looking for a winter coat, this bomber jacket from Danish brand Minimum should be considered. Black in colour it will stay stylish and keep you warm for winters to come. A faux fur hood is complimented with clever zip and button double fastening, which hides the zipper keeping you looking smart. It’s £150.

For a smart but warm night out a leather jacket is a sound investment, but they can be expensive. ASOS have this bomber length, brown leather jacket from their in house collection, and is a real leather jacket for only £125. It’s stylish with a funnel neck and ribbed shoulder detailing. It comes with button and zip up options, as well as front pockets, and side slanted pockets.

All are available from ASOS right now.

ASOS Summer ’13 Sale – Shorts: Michael 84 Edit

asos-sale-june2013-shorts

Summer is here, which means a couple of things, first off it’s supposed to be hot, and second, there are lots of sales on at the moment in the world of fashion. If you are looking for some clothing to keep you cool this summer, now is the time to shop around.

It may not be boiling hot in the UK yet but it is warm and muggy, and it’s time to wear shorts, if not out definately while chilling. If you are going on your holidays to somewhere you’d wear shorts on a daily basis, I have selected a few pair from the ASOS sale, as you can see above.

I think that denim or chino style shorts are a much more grown up, fashionable style to wear, more so than swim shorts or casual sports shorts. I think a few pairs of “good” shorts are worth investing in, even if you are not a big fan of wearing shorts.

  • French Connection Stone colour shorts – £50 £22
  • Humor Red shorts – £50 £30
  • Cheap Monday – £49 £29
  • !Solid Blue Shorts – £50 £29
  • Minimum Green Shorts – £50 £35
  • Esprit Dip Dye Shorts – £45 £31

Check out these and all the other shorts in the ASOS sale here.

Minimum DK Jacket And J.Lindeberg T-Shirt

Featuring: ,

jlindeberg-blacktee1

Today I got myself what will probably be the last of my purchases from the January sales. I was around Newcastle the other day and saw a jacket but did not get it, so decided this morning to go and have another look.

I found a J. Lindeberg t-shirt while I was in the store, and I already got the white t-shirt of this style as a Christmas present. I saw it on the rail on it’s own, and surprisingly it was my size so I got it 😀 It says J.Lindeberg across the chest in black, you can just make it out.

On to the jacket, I saw it a couple of days ago and wanted it but decided not to buy, then after thinking about it I decided to just go and buy it. It is a really nice jacket from Minimum, a Danish young fashion and lifestyle brand. I really love Scandinavian style and brands such as J.Lindeberg, Acne, Junk De Luxe, and Cheap Monday amongst others, so I decided to get this jacket.

The jacket is a great colour, and I love the detailing inside and out, with a great feel and fit.
