Porn In Popular Culture In 2011
So BBC Newsbeat have done a feature about porn in today’s world, and that “Men are worried about heavy Internet porn use“. I have read their article, which makes for interesting reading. You can read it here, and I will be quoting from it, as I don’t agree with lots written. Much of the article compares women to men, which I don’t think is right, and I will explain why.

Comparing men with women
I don’t think it is fair to make a comparison regarding the amount of porn a man or a woman looks at. Its apples and oranges. Its like comparing the amount of football a man watches in comparison to a woman, or something like that. On average there will be more men who spend more time watching football, but that statistic doesn’t really mean anything. It doesn’t make watching football an obsession. So when the BBC write things like:
Almost eight out of 10 men said they had looked at porn on the Internet compared with just over a third of women.
The average man in the study spent more than two hours a week surfing adult sites, compared with less than fifteen minutes for the average woman.
I don’t agree with so much of this. Why are men being compared to women? What does those stats tell you, men watch more porn than women? Did we really need that stat?
Porn is no longer a taboo subject
I remember when I was in college around 9 years ago and we started talking about porn and not many people would be so open about it, one person quite openly said “I watch it all the time, I bet you all do as well” and nobody said a word, everyone just looked in shock and disgust. The same kind of thing would get a different response these days, many still view porn as “wrong” but as the generations go on its becoming more acceptable in mainstream society, with both men and women. Prudish Britain is loosing its grip, and people are becoming more open just like our European friends. I don’t think there is anything wrong with talking about it, as long as you aren’t very graphic about it. Parts of it interest me, I watched a documentary about Jenna Jameson for example, and I know she has an Autobiography as well. Her and some other pornstars are cool because they make a name for themselves as pornstars and also market themselves as a brand, its about business, I like that
Other mentions of the BBC article:
Men looking at porn for at least 10 hours a week were also more likely to say it can put them off real-life sex.
Sixty-one per cent agreed it could make you less interested in sex with a partner
I actually agree with that. If you spend all your day and night watching pornstars and your partner doesn’t look too hot, it may make you less interested in having sex with her. The obvious solution is to watch porn with ugly girls
The writing of the original article by a BBC reporter
I am sorry to end on a negative but I have to mention the writing of this article, its terrible. I didn’t do Journalism at university or have a degree in English but the writing is so bad. Its filled with numbers written as words then switching back to numbers, using percentages then using fractions, its a disgrace. Normally I wouldn’t care but there is so much throughout the article it really pissed me off.
