Newcastle Fashion Week T Shirts

Posted by Michael on Friday 6th May, 2011

It is Newcastle Fashion Week 2011 soon, from 14th May - 21st May actually. Scott Henshall has designed the official Newcastle Fashion Week T Shirts, which can be bought in Fenwicks for only £10, you better hurry tho, as I hear there are only a few left :P All proceeds go to Cash For Kids charity.

So, since I am a T Shirt designer, and I am from Newcastle, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to design a few tees with inspiration from Newcastle Fashion Week :D

These are more of a showcase to myself and to others to see what I can do, experiment with prints and colours, aswell as some typography and cool writing styles.

Ok, here is the first one I did. It is printed in 3 different colours; Black, light blue and purple. Its a play on the words aswell as the main postcode for the centre of Newcastle, NE1, Anyone For Fashion. I was thinking of using a question mark at the end, but changed my mind, I think it looks better without, and is therefore a statement, NE1 For Fashion. The fancy script-like text of Fashion overlaps the word for, to give it more of a design feel.

The second one will look instantly familiar to you. If you like retro music or fashion then you will probably remember the Frankie Say Relax T Shirts, which were based on designs by Katherine Hammnett.  This one is a Newcastle take on the famous tee, with a Geordie twist, incorporating a Geordie phrase, “Wey Aye”.

The third and final tee is simply to showcase a different kind of printing. This is a cool slogan which is written in a leopard print, which is a fashion do or dont, but either way, stands out and makes a statement. I have wanted to have a go at using animal printing for a while, and this is the perfect time to do that. It was the hardest print to do, because I am not used to this type of printing, I am sure if I used it more it would be simple :) I was actually going to combine zebra printing with the leopard print, and have the “Newcastle” part as zebra print. I tested it and it didnt look right, so made it all leopard print :)

Let me know what you think of them :) Obviously these were just a bit of fun for Newcastle Fashion Week. I may give them away on my blog at a later date, so if you are a medium and want a one-of-a-kind tee, let me know ;) I only spent a few hours yesterday on these designs, and didnt really know what to come up with, but I am pleased with them.

What do you think?

UPDATE

Would you like to win one of my designed t-shirts as seen above? I am giving them away on my Facebook page. Read here for more info

Mens Fashion And Style Advice – Dress To Impress

Posted by Michael on Thursday 5th May, 2011

So I was reading another fashion blog and they were basically saying that men want to dress well to impress women, and the reason we dress well was to appeal to the opposite sex. I really think that is selling ‘the man’ short. I do not think that this is really the case, or at least it shouldn’t be. The actual title of their article was “Men’s Fashion – What Women Want“, and the article was a complete contradiction. They asked women’s opinions, and wouldn’t you know it, they were all different! This to me tells its own story, if you dress to how one or a few women like, or what you expect them to like, then you will only appeal to those few and maybe miss out on many others. So how should you dress? What style should you have? Well read on for my opinions.

Be confident, wear what you like

There is no point wearing clothes which don’t fit your personal style, or that you don’t feel comfortable in. If you feel good in your clothes then you will be more confident and your personality will do the rest. Dress appropriately for the occasion, being over-dressed is just as bad as being under-dressed. Smart casual is always a good thing if you don’t really know what kind of occasion it is going to be, or if it could be a mix of both. The combination of a smart jacket with a plain t-shirt can look very clean and smart, but is not as formal as a suit for example.

Remember the basics, such as colour and fit

If you are going out you should carefully pick your whole outfit, and not just randomly pick clothes. You should go into your wardrobe and pull out a few things which you like, and then decide what looks good with what, and before you know it you will have your outfit. Women do this and it works, and if you want to look good, you should start to do this too. Don’t be afraid to ask yourself “does this shirt go with these jeans” or look in the mirror.

Picking a well complimented colour scheme is also a good thing. You shouldnt look like josephs technicolour dreamcoat. Black and white work well with more or less any colour, but wearing something blue, something orange, something green and something red will probably not look too good. Colour schemes are used in everything, from cars to decorating your home. Use them well in your style, wearing all black may look plain and boring, compliment it with a colour which will make your outfit really pop.

The fit of your clothes is also important. Baggy clothes and clothes which don’t fit is not a good look. If you think it hides your fat it doesn’t, it only makes you look worse. If you are buying new clothes try them on and make sure they are a good fit. If you are buying different brands which you probably will, sizing is not universal its a guide; A  medium in one brand might not be identical to a medium in another. A well fitted look is a plus point and is a very basic thing to do, you don’t need to have things skin tight like “paint on clothing”, you want to feel comfortable in the clothing you are wearing.

Be an individual

If you want to get the attention of a woman then this is an obvious way to do it. If they notice you then that is half the battle. Who wants to look like everyone else anyway? I make a joke about this regularly, when going out on a night out how many people wear G Star Raw t-shirts or checked shirts, they seem to be everywhere you look. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike them, but its almost become a uniform with 18-25 year olds on a night out. In terms of style I am not too much of an individual, however my brand awareness is. I like to wear brands which I don’t see others wearing much, such as Cheap Monday, Nudie, and J Lindeberg, three very strong and stylish Scandinavian brands.

Don’t be afraid to experiment or change

Dressing well is about finding your style and what you feel you look good in. This follows on from being an individual. To find it, you will have to try out new looks, experiments with different styles, colours and combinations of clothing, and then you will come up with a good variety which you like. Don’t be put off by friends who don’t like your “new look”, it will be because they are not used to seeing you in different clothes. For example, if you never wear a leather jacket and then you do, it may look strange to you and others who know you, but that may be because it is new, and nobody has seen you in it before.

Take inspiration from others

Do not copy others, but take inspiration from them. You might see well dressed men out there, but do you look, I mean really take notice of what they are wearing? That is a good start to understand what may or may not look good, and how to style yourself. You may not be David Beckham, but you can learn a lot from the way his outfits are put together, and what does and doesn’t work.

Fine tuning makes a difference

Small details can make a difference, and can make you stand out from the rest. By small details I am talking about accessories, or things which add to the main clothes which you are wearing. This could be a watch, belt, jewellery, hat or anything else which compliments your outfit and style well. If you are wearing a cardigan or jacket make sure you know if you want it fastened all the way or not, or not at all. If you are wearing jeans make sure they are fitting you right, if you are wearing a shirt is it tucked in or not? All these minor details could make the difference.

Let your style be transitional

Fashion changes, and you will also change. As you get older your personal fashion and style will more than likely change, just as fashion will. As you age you may start to prefer more plain looking, contemporary styles, rather than being an advertising board for high-street fashion.

Don’t let it end with just your clothes

You have other things at your “style disposal” to attract a woman or if you just want to look or feel good. Hair styles and haircuts is one of them. There is plenty to say about hair, but you should choose a style which is best suited to you. If you are feeling adventurous, try different styles, but remember if you are colouring or cutting hair, it can take a while to get back, its not like clothing you can take off and put back on!

Facial hair and grooming is another thing. Now this can be varied very easily, so it is easy to choose what works for you, or change it. There is no point in writing what is good and what is not, because peoples opinions will differ greatly, a clean shaven person like Lewis Hamilton above maybe attractive to some women, but others may prefer a little facial hair such as David Beckham also above.

Another thing is smell. If you are a regular reader of my blog you will know I have a thing for EDT and fragrances and smells, in fact its more of an Obsession (not the one by Calvin Klein!). I love them, I love to smell different, and its something which can draw a woman in. Smell is a sense, just like sight. If you smell something you don’t like you will mention it, just like if you smell something nice. Some will tell you to pick a fragrance which you like and wear that, which I agree with in part. But I also think that there are so many to choose from and so many different ones that you should pick more than one you like. I read a girl was sick of smelling a particular fragrance because its all that men seemed to use. If you have a variety or don’t go with the same one as your friends it will make a difference and you will stand out.

Roundup – The key points

  • Be an individual, create a unique style, if you are having problems look to others for inspiration without copying
  • Be confident with your fashion sense and style, and don’t be afraid to experiment or change things a little
  • Remember the basics such as colour and fit, aswell as dressing correctly for the occasion
  • Accessorise your outfit choice with a belt, watch or jewellery if you think it is too minimal
  • Don’t forget the grooming; haircare, smell, facial look.

Thanks for reading my opinions on how to dress for a women, or as I prefer to call it “Dress to impress”. I think I have covered lots of snippets briefly and hope they make a difference to you. Over 1,500 words for you to read, I enjoyed writing each one.

Say No To AV – How Will You Vote Tomorrow?

Posted by Michael on Wednesday 4th May, 2011

As you probably know there is a referendum tomorrow to decide if we want to change the way we vote. From First Past The Post, to AV, Alternative Voting.

At first I thought AV was a good thing, you get to rank who you vote for instead of just picking one. But then as I thought about it and read more, I realised it was bad. The so called winner could be the one who is in fact not the most popular and who actually came 2nd or 3rd. The winner of something should be the one with the most votes. Its like saying Man U have the most points in the league, but more people didnt want them to win so we have decided that Blackpool are going to win.

Its far more complicated, to explain and to impliment. I watched their campaign video the other night and it was so tidius and complex, and thats the promotional video! It was funny they used “going to the pub” as their analogy, it made it quite complicated! First Past The Post is simple, the most votes wins. One man, One vote :D You dont need to give “points” to someone you dont support.

How will you be voting?

My New Positive Blogging Style

Posted by Michael on Wednesday 4th May, 2011

If you havent noticed, I have slightly changed my blogging style. This has probably happened many times before, and no doubt will as I get older and my blog evolves too. The biggest change over the past few weeks has been my “positive blogging” and ignoring the negatives.

I always complain about some people being negative in general, then sometimes I get caught up in everyone elses negativity and blog about it. Sometimes it’s good, because parts of this blog is about my life, and parts are negative, I do have dislikes and sometimes write about them. But I have now decided that I will keep it to a minimum :) I cant stop negatives in the world, I cant stop them in my life, but I can stop then on my blog :P

This comes as, today, I found some people writing negative things about me! Yes me and my blog, how funny! Its always going to happen, its the Internet and some people have nothing better to do. I have never slated or slagged off an unknown person on my blog before and never would, because I am not that sad. Why would I waste my time on an unknown? :P

Its funny because one topic I read on the forum (a music forum) the “people” writing the things (which werent really that bad) were of the ages 27 and 36, (they have their ages in their profile) a little old to be ranting about “random” Internet blogs right? They must be sad lonely people though, as they have 60,000 and 70,000 posts on a forum each! That is a huge amount, I owned a forum and only had around 20,000 within 3 or 4 years. They said “he posts 5 times in 2 days!!!” -like thats loads, I thought I hardly posted LOL! They also dont post a profile pic, hiding behind a graphic anonymously and criticizing others, how brave! I sold my forum back in 2005, when I was 21, I grew up and couldnt find the time and had other things going on in my life.

It is alright though, because in the entire topic which was about music, around 90% of it was negative, talking about how bad the music is “nowadays”, pop music is “all the same” and the devil Simon Cowells work etc. I am sure you know the type ;)

Anyway enough of that, now its the new blogging style!

I read other blogs, and take notice of the different writing styles each person has, and see what I like about it or dont like. My blog has always been a personal blog, written from my point of view in my own style, its a personal blog which focuses primarily on fashion, aswell as popular culture and lifestyle, and also my day-to-day life. I read some blogs who write 99% of positive things and are virtually never critical or negative. The bad point of that is people think its a fake way of writing, and sometimes controversial things are good if you want to have a debate going. I will always write in my style, some people may not like it, but my job isnt to change their opinion, if you dont like fashion, popular culture and popular music you arent going to like it. I will focus on the people who do like my blog, stay and read, and come back, and I am grateful to you :)

But I shall be positive, even when being negative I will be positive :D

8 Blue Rays For My Movie Night!

Posted by Michael on Wednesday 4th May, 2011

As you know if you read my blog I have a movie night which is Sunday. I have never been too “into” films and movies, I’m still not much really, when it comes to the Cinema etc. I would prefer chilling in my house watching them.

I ordered 11 DVDs/Blu Rays, which is loads! My movie collection is steadily growing :P

So we have:

  • Cruel Intentions 1, 2 and 3 (I didnt even know they did a 3rd one?!)
  • Oceans 11, 12, 13
  • Before Sunrise and Before Sunset
  • Anchorman
  • Due Date
  • Grown Ups
  • She’s Out Of My League
  • Man On Fire

I havent seen the 3rd Cruel Intentions, Due Date, Grown Ups, She’s Out Of My League or Before Sunset but I have seen the rest and love them. I have another 3 coming which I am waiting for :) I hope none disappoint, like “Hot Tub Time Machine” did. :(

Also look!!! I got “Before Sunrise” the film I was talking about the other day, I watched it on Saturday night on TV and now I bought it :P Also got the sequal “Before Sunset” which was made 9 years later, cant wait to watch them! :)

My film taste is funny, what do we have here….Romance, comedy, action and drama?

I love that Amazon ship all these separately, to get round some tax laws I assume since they are shipped from Jersey. It means they fit in my door and I dont need to be in haha :D

There are lots more I wanna buy, but I always forget them once I am buying them, I should really have a list :P

What do you think?

Wednesday 4th May 2011

Posted by Michael on Wednesday 4th May, 2011

Hello all :)

How are you today? I am good and happy, its sunny and warm, such a good day :D Today I have done work, and also got a cool delivery of things I will show later ;)

Yesterday I watched the Barca – Real Madrid game, it was 1-1, so Barca go through 3-1 on Aggregate. They will play whoever wins tonight between Man U and Schalke, Man U are leading 2-0 and are at home so it will probably be them. I will watch the game tonight.

Here is what I wore today:

  • Evisu T Shirt
  • White Monkee Genes
  • D&G Watch
  • Converse Trainers
  • Ray Ban 2140 Wayfarer

I just love my white jeans, I think I will have to get another pair. Also the brand, Monkee Genes, they are really good, comfortable, nice, good quality and not too expensive at £50. I will buy more from them :)

Also have to say thanks to everyone who comments on my blog :) I do read them all, and try to respond to them all too, as fast as I can :) Today I went over 2,000 comments posted, which is a cool milestone. I have also posted almost 1,300 blog posts, I started to blog properly in December 2009.
